The Athena Coin Collar Necklace

Ancient Wisdom. Modern Power.

A monumental celebration of Ancient Greece, the Athena Coin Collar brings one of antiquity’s most recognisable symbols into a bold piece of contemporary fine jewellery.

At its centre sits an Ancient Greek-style silver tetradrachm depicting Athena, goddess of wisdom, courage, strategy and protector of the city of Athens. The coin is framed in rich 18ct yellow gold and surrounded by vivid emeralds and brilliant-cut diamonds, before flowing into a substantial articulated gold collar.

Designed to feel as though an archaeological treasure has been transformed into modern high jewellery, the piece combines the strength of ancient Greek symbolism with the volume, colour and architectural goldwork of classic Mediterranean jewellery.

The Coin — Athena of Ancient Athens

The design takes inspiration from the celebrated silver tetradrachms of Classical Athens.

Athenian tetradrachms of the 5th century BC depicted the head of Athena wearing her crested helmet, often decorated with olive leaves. The reverse traditionally carried Athena’s owl alongside an olive sprig and crescent. Surviving examples in the British Museum dating from approximately 450–406 BC weigh around 17 grams.

Athens had begun striking silver coins bearing Athena and her owl by the end of the 6th century BC. The large tetradrachm became an important high-value denomination and its remarkably consistent imagery continued through Classical Athens.

These coins became so recognisable that they were known simply as “Owls.” Their trusted silver content helped make them one of the best-known coin types of the ancient world, travelling far beyond Athens through commerce and trade.

The Meaning of Athena

Athena was the patron goddess of Athens and represented wisdom, reason, craftsmanship and strategic warfare.

Her helmet symbolises strength and protection. The owl became her emblem of wisdom and watchfulness, while the olive tree represented peace, prosperity and the city she protected. According to Greek mythology, Athena became patron of Athens after defeating Poseidon in a contest by gifting its people the olive tree.

These symbols give the Athena Coin Collar a meaning beyond its materials.

Wisdom to make the right decisions.
Courage to defend them.
Strength to lead.
Prosperity to build a legacy.

A Piece of History Reimagined

The Athena Coin Collar is designed around the philosophy that the coin remains the hero.

Rather than disguising its ancient character, the setting celebrates it. Deep green emeralds reference prosperity and the Mediterranean landscape, while diamonds introduce light around the weathered silver tones of Athena.

The contrast between ancient silver and highly polished 18ct gold deliberately brings two worlds together — Athens of antiquity and contemporary high jewellery.

Each piece is intended to feel powerful, substantial and unmistakably Greek.
